Green transport for building supplies

Minergie, GEAK, SNBS Hochbau and the 2000-Watt Site: Sustainable construction and transportation of building materials are growing more important.

Trucks powered by CNG and LNG are currently the only rapidly scalable alternative to diesel in freight transport which are also virtually carbon neutral on the road – thanks to having biogas in the tank! The Italian manufacturer Iveco  has also recognised this and is further expanding its portfolio of gas-powered commercial vehicles with an Iveco S-Way 6×2 chassis with a building material flatbed and loading crane.

The new LNG-powered truck is specifically designed to meet the requirements of the building materials transport industry and weather-resistant freight. The basis of the building materials vehicle is an “AS260S46Y/FS 2LNG Iveco S-Way” chassis. This denotes a fully air-suspended 6×2 standard chassis with a 4800 mm wheelbase, a permissible total weight of 26 tonnes plus the additional weight of the alternative drive, an active-space cab, a steerable and liftable trailing axle and a 460 HP Cursor 13 LNG engine.

The two LNG tanks with a capacity of 540 litres hold at least 390 kg of LNG or bio-LNG. This means that the truck can even travel distances of up to 1600 kilometres. The Cursor 13 gas engine it uses can also run on liquefied biogas instead of fossil fuel-derived LNG without technical modifications or special adaptations. The Iveco S-Way therefore puts environmental protection at the forefront, as nitrogen dioxide and soot emissions are significantly lower than with diesel trucks. Using bio-LNG can even reduce CO2 emissions by up to 95%.

As the last few metres to the construction site often entail unfavourable road conditions, the S-Way features a “rocking mode” to restore traction on slippery surfaces – a clever addition. Hybrid bumpers made of steel and plastic also protect the Iveco with its LNG drive against damage, especially on construction sites. And thanks to their modular design, they can even be replaced more cost-effectively if they get damaged. Numerous other bespoke features are also available on request for the Iveco S-Way 6×2 LNG chassis. (pd/jas, 24 May 2022)
